Abstract
Midlines are medium-length venous access devices that are implanted with an ultrasound-guided technique and emerge as an alternative to short peripheral venous catheters and PICCs.The main objective of this study was to find out the economic repercussions of introducing 10cm all-in-one midline catheters in a tertiary hospital as an alternative to 20cm catheters. As secondary objectives, to assess the mean duration of these venous accesses, to know what medical specialties the patients in whom the catheters were implanted belonged to, and to know what the most fre-quent reasons for withdrawal were. A retrospective descriptive study was carried out by reviewing the venous ac-cesses inserted between March and December 2020. The possibility of inserting 10cm catheters instead of 20cm ones meant a saving of €20,643.15. The mean duration was 8.5 days, and 63% of the devices allowed completion of the planned therapy before removal. The main complication detected was accidental exit.
