Abstract

A 76-year-old woman, with no pathological history of interest, presented with long-standing ulcers on the lower limbs. On the left lower extremity she presented a large ulcer, 23 years old, of multifactorial cause, with irregular borders, abundant exudate and wound bed occupied by a fibrinous tissue that bled easily and that, distally, had grown to exceed the edges of the wound. A biopsy confirmed malignancy in the form of a Marjolin's ulcer (high-grade infil-trating cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma), which required an infracondylar amputation of the limb. Chronic wounds that do not heal despite adequate treatment or that present clinical signs and/or atypical locations should be biopsied as soon as possible. Once the diagnosis of malignancy is confirmed, the approach should be multidisciplinary.
