Abstract
The purpose of this review study was to test whether the use of topical honey is an effective treatment for diabetic foot ulcers. A literature search was performed in PubMed, LILACS and SCOPUS for observational and experimental studies published since 2008. Google Scholar, the IDF Diabetes Atlas, ResearchGate and the websites of the GNEAUPP and the Spanish Association of Vascular Nursing and wounds were also consulted. Nine studies were included in the review: six randomized clinical trials, one quasi-experimental study, one prospective observational study, and one case series. Six studies used commercial food-grade honey, two studies used medical-grade honey, and one used royal jelly. The experimental studies compared honey with other products, mainly gauze moistened with saline, but also with povidone iodine or olive oil. Some studies suggest that the use of honey in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers has positive effects, but the quality of the available evidence on its effectiveness is low.
